Castles Along the Rhine

A Storybook River Cruise from Basel to Amsterdam

At Bressenden Travel, we specialise in creating unforgettable journeys. Whether you’re looking for a tailor-made escape, a group tour, or a luxury river cruise, our team is here to help you travel well. One of our most loved river cruises in Europe is the Castles Along the Rhine route between Basel and Amsterdam. This scenic journey takes you through four countries and some of the most charming towns in Central Europe. It is ideal for travellers who enjoy a blend of natural beauty, fascinating history, and relaxed luxury.

If you have ever dreamed of sailing past hilltop castles and vineyard-covered slopes, this river cruise will be hard to beat.

Why This Cruise Stands Out

A luxury experience from start to finish
The Castles Along the Rhine cruise offers five-star comfort from the moment you arrive. You’ll sail aboard the elegant ships, where everything is included. From gourmet dining and fine wines to expertly guided daily excursions and airport transfers. The décor is inspired by classic European art and design, and the atmosphere on board feels more like a boutique hotel than a traditional cruise ship.

Breath-taking scenery all the way
As the ship glides down the Rhine, you’ll pass vineyard-covered hills, forested riverbanks, and castles perched high above the water. It is a landscape that has inspired poets, painters, and composers for centuries. Each day offers new scenery and a new perspective, with plenty of time to enjoy the views from the open-air deck or unwind with a drink in the lounge.

A journey through culture and history
This is much more than a scenic river cruise. You will explore cities rich in heritage, stroll through medieval town centres, and visit cathedrals, castles, and grand old palaces. Along the way, you’ll discover regional food, local wines, and stories that bring Europe’s past to life. From the romantic streets of Strasbourg to the vibrant heart of Amsterdam, every stop adds something unique to the journey.

Highlights Along the Way

This river cruise is packed with memorable highlights and charming stops. You can see your full itinerary HERE, but below are just a few highlights as a teaser.

Strasbourg

Set on the border of France and Germany, Strasbourg is a city full of charm. Its old town, known as La Petite France, looks like something from a fairytale, with timber-framed houses and narrow lanes. The cathedral here is one of the finest Gothic buildings in Europe and is visible from far across the plains.

Strasbourg’s blend of French elegance and German tradition makes it a fascinating place to explore. You can expect cobbled streets, canals lined with flowers, and lively cafés serving local specialities like tarte flambée.

Speyer

Speyer is one of the oldest cities in Germany and has a rich Romanesque heritage. Its most famous landmark is the Speyer Cathedral, which dates back to the 11th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The town is peaceful and walkable, with wide squares and riverside views. It also offers more unusual experiences. One excursion takes you to a nearby vinegar estate where tastings are paired with stories and traditions passed down through generations.

Private Doktorenhof Vinegar Estate Visit and Tasting
For something a little different, visit the Weinessiggut Doktorenhof estate in the Palatinate wine region. Here, you will take part in a special vinegar tasting — and yes, that means sipping vinegar made from fine wines like Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Noir.

These elegant aperitifs are aged with care using a century-old vinegar “mother” and flavoured with herbs, fruits, and spices. Tastings take place in a candlelit room accompanied by choral music, where guests wear traditional cloaks for an atmospheric touch.

This experience is as much theatre as it is tasting. You will also have time to browse the estate’s gift shop, which is full of beautifully packaged vinegars and gourmet delights to take home.

Cologne

Cologne is a city that perfectly blends the old and the new. Its skyline is dominated by the twin spires of Cologne Cathedral, one of Europe’s great Gothic masterpieces.

Inside the city, you’ll find Roman ruins, art galleries, and plenty of places to sample local Kölsch beer. Cologne is also known for its friendly atmosphere and vibrant cultural scene. It is a place where history feels alive and where each street has a story to tell.

The Rhine Gorge

Between the towns of Boppard and Rüdesheim lies the most scenic stretch of the Rhine. This section, often called the Rhine Gorge, is a UNESCO-listed landscape filled with castles, cliffs, and vineyards.

As the ship winds through the gorge, the scenery is nothing short of spectacular. Dozens of castles appear on both sides of the river, some in ruins and others fully restored. Among them is the famous Lorelei Rock, steeped in legend and one of the most iconic sights along the Rhine.

This part of the cruise is best enjoyed from the open-air deck, where you can simply sit back and take it all in. Cameras are a must here, as every turn reveals another postcard view.

Our Personal Thoughts on the Castles Along the Rhine River Cruise

I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing this river cruise myself and I can honestly say it’s one of my favourites.

As someone who loves castles and wine, I was completely in my element. There’s nothing quite like sailing past turreted fortresses and hillside vineyards with a glass of Riesling in hand.

What surprised me most, though, were the smaller towns. Places I hadn’t even heard of before turned out to be some of the most memorable stops. Don’t get me wrong, Cologne and Strasbourg are fantastic, but those quieter ports offered something truly special. Less crowded, full of character, and full of stories.

The service and quality on board were top class. From the food to the excursions, everything ran smoothly. I couldn’t fault a thing.

If you’re thinking about your next trip, I can wholeheartedly recommend this journey along the Rhine. It’s the perfect blend of comfort, culture, and charm.
