Itinerary
DAY ONE: Northward to the Cairngorms
The Gateway to the Highlands
Your journey begins at Edinburgh Waverley as the Royal Scotsman departs in the early afternoon. Settle into the mahogany-clad elegance of your cabin as the train travels north toward the “Fair City” of Perth. Indulge in a traditional afternoon tea while passing through Dunkeld, Pitlochry, and Blair Atholl. As the rolling hills of Perthshire give way to dramatic peaks, you glide past Aviemore and into the heart of the Cairngorms National Park.
A Tranquil Evening
The train stops for the night at the village of Boat of Garten on the private Strathspey Railway. After a dinner featuring the finest local flavours, enjoy an evening of kinship in the Observation Car. Musicians join the train to blend sweet Gaelic songs with lively folk melodies. A celebration best enjoyed with a local dram amongst just 38 fellow guests.
DAY TWO: The Iron Road to the Isles
Britain’s Most Scenic Route
Departing Keith, the train travels toward Inverness before joining what is arguably the most scenic rail route in Britain. As lunch is served, marvel at the climb to the Luib summit and the ancient Achnashellach Forest.
Gardens, Seals, or Wilderness Hikes Upon reaching Strathcarron, choose your afternoon adventure:
-
Attadale Gardens: Visit this 30,000-acre estate to explore the Water, Japanese, and Sunken gardens, followed by refreshments with the Macpherson family.
-
Plockton: Continue to this picturesque village to see a colony of wild seals, followed by a traditional Highland welcome and a dram at the seafront Plockton Hotel.
-
Guided Wellness Hike: Stride out on a guided walk near Kyle of Lochalsh, meandering through woodland with views of ancient castles and the chance to spot red deer or golden eagles. Rejoin the train at Kyle of Lochalsh, the gateway to the Isle of Skye, for your overnight stay.
DAY THREE: Pursuit and Celebration
Rothiemurchus Estate
Retrace the route toward Aviemore for a morning at the magnificent Rothiemurchus Estate. Choose from traditional country pursuits such as fishing or clay pigeon shooting, or opt for a forest bathing experience. A guided sensory walk designed for mindfulness. For the adventurous, pre-booked wild swimming is also available. Afterwards, enjoy refreshments at the hunting lodge while learning the estate’s history.
Distilleries and Dancing
After lunch on board, disembark for a private tour and tasting at a renowned Speyside distillery. Alternatively, enjoy a leisurely cycle ride to discover the banks of the River Spey or nearby lochs. Your final evening features a celebratory feast as the train travels toward Perth. The journey concludes with spirited dancing in the Observation Car. A fitting finale to your Highland tour.
DAY FOUR: The Final Return
Across the Kingdom of Fife
Enjoy a final breakfast as the train leaves Perth and crosses the Tay Bridge. Journey through the former Kingdom of Fife and across the Forth Bridge before arriving back at Edinburgh Waverley in the morning, where your expedition concludes.

The Bressenden difference
EDWARDIAN ELEGANCE – A Private Country House on Wheels
Unlike the Art Deco styling of other luxury trains, the Royal Scotsman is designed as a tribute to the mahogany-clad grace of an Edwardian estate. With a maximum of just 40 guests on board, the atmosphere is uniquely intimate, offering a level of personal service and privacy that mirrors a stay in a grand Scottish manor.
THE OBSERVATION CAR – The Social Heart of the Highlands
The social centre of the journey is the iconic Observation Car, which features the only open-air veranda on the British rails. This unique vantage point allows guests to step outside and breathe in the Highland air while crossing historic viaducts or winding past sea lochs, providing an unobstructed connection to the passing landscape.
HIGHLAND GASTRONOMY – The Finest Scottish Larder
Dining on board is a celebration of local provenance. Every meal is a gastronomic event, featuring ingredients sourced directly from the regions the train traverses. From wild Highland salmon to Aberdeen Angus beef, the menu is complemented by an extensive collection of over 50 malt whiskies served in the traditional atmosphere of the wood-panelled dining cars.
