Itinerary
DAY ONE: Westward to the Crossroads
The Journey Begins
Your expedition departs Edinburgh Waverley in the afternoon, weaving west through Falkirk and skirting Glasgow to reach the northern banks of the Clyde. Settle into the mahogany-clad sanctuary of your cabin and savour the cinematic views as the train travels toward Spean Bridge.
A Gaelic Welcome
As evening sets in, enjoy a superb informal dinner featuring the finest seasonal Scottish produce. The night concludes in the Observation Car, where musicians and performers join the train to blend sweet, slow Gaelic songs with lively folk melodies—the perfect introduction to the Highlands.
DAY TWO: Sands, Viaducts and Waterfalls
The Silver Sands of Morar
Continue west, sweeping past the majestic Ben Nevis—Britain’s highest mountain. Disembark at Arisaig for a morning stroll along the Silver Sands of Morar, marvelling at the soft white beaches and breathtaking views across the water to the Cuillin mountain range. Lunch is served as the train retraces its path over the iconic
Glenfinnan Viaduct. Highland Heroes or Wilderness Hikes
This afternoon, choose your adventure:
-
Glenfinnan Exploration: Join a local guide to discover the lively stories of great Scottish heroes and the Jacobite rising.
-
Glen Nevis Hike: Accompany mountain guides for a hike through stunning Glen Nevis to the spectacular Steall Waterfall. Return for an informal dinner and an evening of spirited Scottish music in the Observation Car.
DAY THREE: Hebridean Myths and Island Life
Gateway to the Isles
Disembark in Oban, the bustling gateway to the Hebrides. Choose to take a private boat tour around the nearby Island of Kerrera, known for its dramatic cliffs and ancient atmosphere, or join a historian for a walking tour to reveal the deep-seated clan history of the town.
Whisky and Island Stories
After lunch at a local pier-front restaurant, visit the farmhouse of Coinneach MacLeod, the Hebridean Baker. Spend the afternoon hiking with friendly dogs, feeding Highland cows, and delving into local folklore. Alternatively, travel to the atmospheric Island of Easdale, shaped by centuries of slate quarrying. Both paths lead back to the farmhouse for whisky, award-winning shortbread, and island tales before the train stables in Kilmarnock.
DAY FOUR: The Pink Palace and The High Peaks
Drumlanrig Castle
Travel south into Dumfriesshire to visit Drumlanrig Castle, the “Pink Palace.” Explore this turreted sandstone mansion, home to the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry. Marvel at the important collections of silver, porcelain, and fine art before wandering the 90,000-acre estate’s formal gardens and woodlands.
The Journey North
Rejoin the train for lunch and enjoy an afternoon of “slow travel.” Watch from the Observation Car as the rolling hills of Perthshire transform into dramatic peaks and valleys. The train stops for the night at the peaceful village of Boat of Garten on the private Strathspey Railway.
DAY FIVE: Highland Pursuits and Royal Residences
Cairngorm Traditions
Spend your morning at the Rothiemurchus Estate. Choose from traditional country pursuits such as clay pigeon shooting or fishing, or join a park ranger for a guided walk through the ancient Caledonian pine forest.
A Royal Finale
Savour a leisurely lunch as the train journeys south through Blair Atholl and Pitlochry. Your final visit is to Stirling Castle, the childhood home of Mary Queen of Scots. Enjoy a private champagne and canapé reception followed by a fascinating tour of the royal apartments. The journey reaches its crescendo with a Gala Farewell Dinner as the train travels toward Dundee, followed by traditional Scottish country dancing on the station platform.
DAY SIX: The Final Return
Across the Bridges
Enjoy a leisurely final breakfast in the dining cars as the Royal Scotsman travels from Dundee back to Edinburgh. Your grand tour of the clans, castles, and isles concludes as the train arrives at Edinburgh Waverley in the morning.

Highland Gastronomy: Experience the pinnacle of Scottish culinary excellence. The onboard chefs have reimagined the menus to showcase the “Wealth of the Highlands,” blending traditional precision with seasonal ingredients like hand-dived scallops and Aberdeen Angus beef, all sourced from local artisans found along the rhythmic path of the rails.
